Resident Transplant Rotations

As you know, the Resident Review Commission (RRC) proposed to eliminate the requirement for a rotation in transplant surgery. ASTS believes that elimination of this requirement will have negative consequences for both residents and the future of transplant surgery and has led efforts to maintain the rotation.  Participants at the recent Transplant Surgery Fellowship Training Consensus Conference suggested that it would be worthwhile for each transplant program director to write a letter to their institution’s General Surgery Program Director that outlines steps individual programs are taking to improve the resident experience on transplant rotations. A draft letter and (other supporting materials) have been provided that you can download and modify per institutional variance. Be certain your letter addresses applicable issues such as ASTS accreditation, training of additional fellows and other issues specific to your institution.
