Baylor-Simmons Transplant Institute

The Baylor-Simmons Transplant Institute would like to announce two open positions for its Multi-organ Abdominal Transplant Fellowship starting July 2013. Baylor's two hospitals' combined numbers represent some of the highest volumes in the world.  Fellows will participate in the evaluation and perioperative management of patients with acute and chronic liver and kidney disease and will be given an ample opportunity for clinical research. The program is ASTS accredited in liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation. Fellows will also gain experience in laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, hepatobiliary surgery, and islet cell transplantation.

Georgetown University Medical Center

Georgetown University Medical Center is seeking 1 candidate for fellowship training in Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery for July 2013-2015. The program offers complete training in adult and pediatric liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation. As one of only 5 centers for intestinal/multi-visceral transplantation, it has distinguished itself as a leader in small bowel surgery, receiving referrals from hospitals across the region. The fellowship provides an extensive clinical experience in laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, kidney swaps, live donor liver transplantation, pediatric and adult liver and intestinal transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, as well as all aspects of cadaveric procurement. The program is ASTS-certified and uses the NRMP match system. Please note that we do not sponsor H1 visas. While priority will be given to those who have completed a U.S. residency, all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have completed a surgical residency by 2013 to be eligible.

Lahey Clinic Medical Center

Fellowship applications are now being accepted for a two-year advanced ASTS-approved training program in multi-organ transplantation at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, MA beginning July 1, 2013.  Applicants must be board certified, eligible or equivalent in general surgery, and hold or be eligible to obtain a full State of Massachusetts medical license.  The fellow will receive comprehensive training in all aspects of transplant management:  organ procurement and preservation, living donor and recipient surgery, evaluation and listing of prospective transplant candidates and post transplant care and immunosuppression management.  In addition, the fellow with gain experience in advanced Hepatobiliary surgery.

Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School

The MGH/HMS Abdominal Organ Transplant program is seeking applicants for our ASTS accredited two-year fellowship.  One position is offered annually, with training beginning July 1, 2013 as two alternating tracks:  Kidney Transplant/Transplant Research (100 kidneys, 40 laparoscopic donors) and Liver/Kidney transplant and Hepatobiliary surgery (100 livers, 60 kidneys, 40 lap donors, 30 HPB cases).  Our graduates are leaders in academic transplant surgery.  We seek applicants with mature clinical judgement, operative independence, and a desire to advance the field.  We are accepting applications for the 2013 fellowship.  Interested applicants are welcomed to visit our program on an informal basis at their convenience.

Mayo Clinic Arizona

Mayo Clinic Arizona is seeking 1 candidate through the 2012 NRMP Match for fellowship training in Transplant Surgery for a 2 year term beginning July 2013.  We have a comprehensive abdominal transplant program including liver (adult deceased, living donor and pedatric liver transplant in collaboration with Phoenix Children's Hospital), kidney (living and deceased donor) and pancreas transplants.  We perform 50-60 liver transplants, 200-250 kidney transplants and 25-30 pancreas transplants annually.  The program is ASTS-certified and uses the NRMP match system.  Applicants must have completed a surgical residency by 2013 to be eligible.  Interested applicants should see our website for further details:

Montefiore Medical Center

The Montefiore-Einstein Center for Transplantation is seeking applicants for our Transplant Surgery Fellowship beginning July 1, 2013.  This two-year fellowship program will provide comprehensive training in kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation, as well as laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy and hepatobiliary surgery.  Clinical and basic science research opportunities are available.  The training takes place at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine located in the heart of New York City. 

The applicant must be board eligible or equivalent.  For foreign medical graduates ECFMG certification is required.

Mount Sinai Medical Center

Mount Sinai Medical Center would like to announce two positions for its Multi-organ Abdominal Transplant Fellowship starting July 2013. The two-year clinical program provides comprehensive training in all aspects of transplant management. The program includes clinical activity averaging yearly more than 100 liver transplants, 200 kidney transplants, 10 small bowel or multivisceral transplants, 12 pancreas transplants, 200 hepatic procedures and Pediatric transplantation (kidney, liver, intestine). The living donor program accounts for more than 15 livers a year, and 70 kidneys. Candidates must have completed an accredited general surgical residency and USMLE steps I, II, and III, prior to beginning the fellowship. ECFMG certification required.

New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University

The fellowship at NYPH/CU is one of the premier training programs in the country.  The program performs approximately 250 kidney transplants, 130 liver transplants and 10-20 pancreas transplants.  Fellows along the surgical staff perform 150 hepatobiliary surgeries annually.  The LDLTx program is one of the most active in the US performing 20-25 LDLTs annually.  The kidney arm of the program offers an equally broad experience performing 125 LDRTx and approximately 125 DDRTx. 

Education is core to the mission of the program and fellows are expected to run the services and perform operations as the primary surgeon.

New York University Abdominal Transplantation Fellowship at NYU Langone Medical Center

NYU Langone Medical Center has one opening for the 2-year, ASTS fellowship in liver and kidney transplantation starting July 2013.

Fellows will obtain in-depth experience in deceased and living donor surgical techniques, as well as preoperative and postoperative patient management and immunosuppression at NYU and SUNY Downstate.  Fellows gain experience and expertise in laparoscopic donor nephrectomy.  NYU is a UNOS designated live donor liver transplant center.

Stanford University

Fellows receive training in liver, kidney, pancreas and intestinal transplantation.  Approximately 90 livers and 130 kidney transplants are performed annually.  One third of these transplants are done in children, resulting in one of the best balanced training programs in the country.  Because of it, fellows learn a special set of skills such as splitting livers in vivo and ex situ, living donor operations, laparoscopic procedures and hepatobiliary and portal hypertension surgery.  Our large clinical volume coupled with the dynamic research environment at Stanford makes this Fellowship a premier training program.  In fact, Stanford fellows have enjoyed a long tradition of being highly sought after by transplant centers throughout the country.  Applications should be forwarded to:

The Miami Transplant Institute at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida

The Miami Transplant Institute is seeking applicants for a Transplant Fellowship beginning July 1, 2013.  This 2-year multi-organ fellowship is approved by the ASTS and will provide comprehensive training in kidney, liver, pancreas and intestinal transplantation, as well as deceased-donor multi-organ recovery and live donor nephrectomy.

Tulane University Medical Center

Tulane University Medical Center is accepting applications for the 2012 NRMP Match for a 2 year Kidney Transplant Fellowship beginning July 2013.  The program provides comprehensive surgical training in both adult (125+/yr) and pediatric (10+/yr) kidney transplant surgery and allows for time in clinical research.  Fellows will also be trained in the evaluation and management of patients, multi-organ donor procurement, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy and vascular access.  Pancreas and liver transplant exposure is desired.  Candidate must have completed an accredited general surgery residency, USMLE 1-3 and have ECFMG certification/J-1 visa (if an international graduate).

University of Alabama at Birmingham

The University of Alabama at Birmingham's ASTS accredited abdominal transplant fellowship will be accepting applications for its 2013 two-year program through the 2012 NRMP fellowship match.  One of the largest transplant programs in the United States, UAB performed nearly 400 abdominal transplants in 2010.  Fellows at UAB will receive comprehensive training in liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation, living and deceased organ recovery, and hepatobiliary and dialysis access surgery.  Fellows will be exposed to the pre-, intra- and post-operative management of adult and pediatric transplant patients, and will acquire an in-depth knowledge of transplant medicine and immunosuppression.  Fellows are offered the opportunity to participate in clinical research, and attendance at national meetings is encouraged and supported.

University of Chicago

The University of Chicago offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art surgical training in all aspects of abdominal organ transplantation as well as hepatobiliary surgery.  Our breadth of services includes pediatric renal and liver transplantation, laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy, adult-to-adult as well as adult-to-child living liver donation, deceased and living donor intestinal transplantation, as well as laparoscopic liver resection.

Our faculty is composed of five attending physicians including four at the rank of Professor of Surgery and three with MD, PhD degrees.  Our section has multiple active laboratories performing transplant-related research in addition to our University strength and is adding a translational research program.  We also have an ABS-approved surgical critical care fellowship program available to augment the Transplant Fellowship.

University of Maryland

The University of Maryland Medical School is accepting applications for an ASTS accredited Abdominal Organ Transplant Fellowship beginning in July 2013.  The University of Maryland is one of the largest volume transplant centers in the country performing over 340 transplants a year.  The two-year training program is comprised of approximately 80-90% clinical involvement and 10-20% research activities.  Clinical activities will include cadaver organ recovery, laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy, organ transplantation (kidney, pancreas and liver), complex hepatobiliary surgery as well as patient evaluations, work-up, and post-transplant care. The clinical research component will include opportunities to participate in clinical trials on human subjects, retrospective research analyses and clinical research protocol development. 

For foreign medical graduates, a J1 visa or green card along with ECFMG certification are required. All applicants must have passing USMLE scores for Steps 1, 2, and 3.

The University of Michigan offers a comprehensive two-year ASTS-approved multi-organ transplantation fellowship.  Although our transplant volume is high, we restrict our program to one position each year, to maximize each fellow's professional, technical and educational development.  We offer training in all aspects of kidney and liver transplant programs, advanced laparoscopic procedures, an extensive hepatobiliary practice, dialysis access surgery and multi-organ deceased donor organ procurement.  There is ample exposure to kidney paired donation, the histocompatibility laboratory, our organ procurement organizations and opportunities for clinical research.

The abdominal transplant fellowship at Penn involves rotations at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where over 140 liver and 180 kidney transplants are performed per year. Fellows acquire extensive experience in procurements, kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation, pediatric transplantation, living donor laparoscopic nephrectomy, living liver donor and split liver transplantation and islet cell transplantation. Non-transplant surgery includes vascular access and hepatobiliary procedures. Transplant-focused research is encouraged with significant infrastructure support for data collection, analysis, IRB issues and manuscript review, and accepted presentations are supported with travel funds. University of Tennessee/Methodist Transplant Institute

The University of Tennessee/Methodist Transplant Institute in Memphis, Tennessee is among the 10 largest liver transplant centers in the U.S.  We are actively seeking applicants for a two year transplant fellowship for academic years 2013-2015.  In conjunction with LeBonheur Children's Hospital, we performed 129 liver transplant, 128 kidney (including laparoscopic donor nephrectomies) and 8 pancreas transplants in 2010.  In addition to the tremendous opportunity, fellows may assist in over 100 major hepatobiliary cases per year, including neuroendocrine tumor resections, 200 vascular access cases per year, and laparoscopic liver tumor resections.  This fellowship is ASTS approved for both Liver and Kidney transplantation.

University of Washington Medical Center


The University of Washington's Abdominal Transplant Surgery Fellowship Program is an ASTS-approved program for Liver and Kidney Transplantation. Under the leadership of Chief of Transplant Surgery Dr. Jorge Reyes, the objective of this program is to produce future leaders in the field of transplantation. Training includes the gamut of clinical training in the assessment and care of patients with end organ disease, the various areas of technical surgical training in donor and recipient procedures (including Hepatobiliary surgery and vascular access), pathologic diagnostics of transplantation, immunotherapy, and clinical research. Our clinical trainees have consistently received awards for their research and presented at national and international venues. UW is nationally recognized as a high-performing transplant center, having been awarded 2 silver medals and a bronze medal in 2010 by the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration for outstanding post-transplant survival, transplant, and mortality rates in its kidney and liver transplant programs. Two-year clinical fellowships are available, with the possibility of an additional one to two years' research time, depending upon level of research experience and extramural funding. UW transplant research presently is focused on clinical Tolerance trials, ischemia reperfusion studies, and clinical outcomes research.
