Current and Recent Committee Activities

2) Planning is underway for the ASTS 9th Annual State of the Art Winter Symposium, The Right Organ for the Right Recipient, January 16-18, 2009 at the Marco Island Marriott, Marco Island, Florida.

3 ) Awards Announcement: John J. Fung, MD, PhD, Cleveland Clinic and Robert M. Merion, MD, University of Michigan are the first recipients of the Francis Moore Excellence in Mentorship in the Field of Transplantation Surgery Award. The two were presented with a plaque during the Annual Vanguard Committee Cocktail Hour January 26, 2008.

4 ) A Career Development Symposium was held in conjunction with the 8th Annual State of the Art Winter Symposium, January 25, 2008, Marco Island, FL. The Vanguard Committee addressed non-clinical issues that are critical to the career development of the junior membership. Marwan Abouljoud, MD, Henry Ford Hospital, led an interactive session entitled Burnout and Work/Life Balance, a topic essential to advancing career and professional development.

5 ) Organized the 8th Annual State of the Art Winter Symposium, The High Risk Recipient and Pre-meeting course, Practical Knowledge for Transplant Surgeons.

6 ) Collaborate with the Fellowship Training Committee on development of a Fellowship Training Curriculum for Fellows.

7 ) Collaborate with the Awards Committee on an annual basis to review all Vanguard Prize applications.

8 ) Continue to provide the membership with quarterly issues of the Vanguard Committee Newsletter,
