The ASTS advocates Congress to pass new laws, change existing laws and for appropriations to legislation such as the Organ Donation and Recovery Improvement Act signed into law April 2004. The ASTS and its members advocate for changes concerning transplantation for the benefit of patients and society.  The ASTS Council, Committees and Special Task Forces work with legislative counsel to provide education and recommendations. The ASTS also collaborates with the Transplant Roundtable, a group of 13 transplant-related organizations.
