Advanced Transplant Providers (ATP) Committee

Committee Members | ATP Award

Mission Statement, Committee Accomplishments & Mentorship Program

As the art and science of transplantation has grown over recent decades, so has the presence of Advanced Transplant Providers (ATP). Today, there are over  2,000 ATPs nationwide and growing, all from various backgrounds and certifications. Prior to the implementation of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) ATP Committee, no specialty organization existed to support transplant surgeons and physicians.

Today the mission of the Advance Transplant Provider Committee is to decrease the geographical barriers between providers and allow for a close, strong, supportive community to exist.

Because of the ATP Committee’s  commitment to this mission, the following goals have been established and accomplishments have been achieved.

Goals and accomplishments:

Short-term

1.     Increase educational opportunities for advanced transplant providers at all ASTS conferences.

2.     Continue to recruit more advanced transplant providers to ASTS membership

3.     Continue to increase various channels and ease of communication between ATP’s and the transplant community.

4.     Establish a strong mentorship program for advanced providers new to the transplant community.

Long-term

1.     Become the "go-to" source for surgical clinician resources, education and support within the transplant community.

2.     Develop an enthusiastic environment that promotes and emphasizes a continuous flow of training and curriculum development for advance practice providers.

3.     Encourage and support the use of scientific information and evidenced-based research to enhance clinical practice.

Committee Accomplishments:

1.     Expert of the week series geared toward the education needs of ATP's

2.     Developed the Advanced Transplant Provider award in 2010 to recognize outstanding providers within the transplant community and provide them with the opportunity to attend the ASTS Annual Winter Symposium.

3.     Conducted the first practice survey of transplant specific to ATP.

4.     Recently implemented the first phase of a mentorship program for new ATPs.

5.     Implemented the first ATP e-Newsletter which serves as a strong communication vehicle for the ATP community.

ASTS Advanced Transplant Provider Mentorship Program

The ASTS Advanced Transplant Providers (ATP) Committee developed the ASTS ATP Mentorship program. This program offers a formal mentoring framework in which a de novo clinician may enter the field of transplantation and benefit from the peer support and experience of providers throughout the country. Clinicians within the ATP community arise from many specialties, and can offer a wealth of resources that may provide a new member of the community the support and framework to succeed in this very demanding and passionate field.

How to get involved
