Francis Moore Excellence in Mentorship
in the Field of Transplantation Surgery Award

ASTS is committed to recognizing outstanding mentorship. This award acknowledges the efforts of established surgeons for their stewardship of fellowship trainees and junior faculty. 

One individual will receive this honor each year at the Symposium Recognition Awards Presentation & Ceremony, held during the ASTS Annual State of the Art Winter Symposium.

Goran B. Klintmalm, MD, PhD, FACS
Baylor University Medical Center

Dr. Goran Klintmalm is chairman and chief of the Annette C. and Harold C. Simmons Transplant Institute at Baylor University Medical Center in the Dal1as, Texas. He is past President of (ASTS) American Society of Transplant Surgeons

Dr. Klintmalm received his medical degree and PhD from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Surgical residency in Sweden. Fellow ships under Dr. Thomas Starzl in Denver and Pittsburgh, and under Dr. Carl Groth in Stockholm.

Dr. Klintmalm was recruited to Baylor in Dallas in 1984 to begin a multi-organ transplant program. The program has performed over 3,500 liver and over 3,300 kidney transplants to date.

Dr. Klintmalm is the author/coauthor of more than 600 publications. He has diverse research interests. He established and has maintained the Baylor Biorepository and Clinical Research Database in liver transplantation since 1985.

The Baylor program is an accredited training program for liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation. To date 37 transplant surgeons have received their training at Baylor.



 

 





 



 

 




 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 


2013 NOMINATION INSTRUCTIONS





NOMINATIONS

  • The nominator must write a maximum 500 word description of the mentor’s contributions to his/her training and career

  • Provide a current CV for the nominated mentor

  • Junior members of the ASTS (candidate members or junior faculty within 7 years of fellowship) may nominate 1 mentor annually for this award

  • No mentor can win the prize more than once every 5 years



SELECTION

  • The Vanguard Committee shall review all nominations and present recommendations to to the ASTS Council for approval

  • Selection will be based upon contributions made by the mentor, clinical or research success of the nominator, and a history of mentorship for other trainees

  • Please Note: The funding of ASTS awards is contingent upon the availability of funds and the receipt of qualified applications.

THE AWARD

  • Three nights' hotel accommodations to attend the ASTS State of the Art Winter Symposium

  • Complimentary registration to Pre-Meeting Course and Winter Symposium

  • Reimbursement of travel expenses, according to the ASTS reimbursement policy

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • The recipient must attend the Vanguard Mentorship Reception at the ASTS Winter Symposium to formally accept the award.
