Congratulations to the 2010 Award Recipients

Congratulations to Ronald W. Busuttil, MD, PhD, University of California, Los Angeles and Mark Hardy, MD, Columbia University Medical Center, as the 2010 recipients of the ASTS Francis Moore Excellence in Mentorship in Transplantation Surgery Award. They will be honored formally during the Annual Vanguard Committee Reception and Awards Ceremony held during the 2010 ASTS State of the Art Winter Symposium this January 15 – 17, 2010. The Vanguard Committee created this award to recognize the outstanding efforts of established surgeons for their mentorship of fellows and junior faculty. The award is designed to foster excellent mentorship and acknowledge the time and effort required to advance the careers of new investigators and clinicians.

Ronald W. Busuttil, MD, PhD
University of California, Los Angeles

Mentoring (I think) isn’t about telling you what to do or putting you on some committee; it’s about showing you how to do it. He taught me, he showed me, himself, how to do it.  He showed me how you take care of these patients. He showed me that he, and now I, could make these incredibly sick people better.  It changed my whole life.  I’ll just say that he was the most incredible mentor a young person could have.   What he does for fellows is show them the mission and send them out in the world to expand the endeavor as well prepared as they can possibly be. He gives you his confidence and optimism.

          -     Andrew Cameron, MD, PhD, Johns Hopkins University

Mark A. Hardy, MD
Columbia University Medical Center

When I first met Professor Hardy within the realms of my Fellowship training after general surgery training he said “ Read 5 times more, work 10 times harder and be a lot more dedicated than you were in general surgery.” His exhaustive knowledge base, his fine historical perspective in transplant surgery, general and vascular surgery and his infectious enthusiasm made that possible. His broad smile, love for his patients and unending capacity in seeing and understanding all his patients was what I needed to see. Professor Hardy’s love for teaching knows no bounds. He desires to make all of his junior colleagues understand the inner workings and mysteries and enigma concerning what he had learnt over a lifetime.

          -    Vaughn Whittaker, MD, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center
