The American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) appreciates the U.S. House Ways & Means Subcommittee discussing opportunities to increase patient safety, transparency and trust in organ transplantation. ASTS recognizes the need to ensure the safety of those who selflessly give the Gift of Life and to improve the performance of poorly functioning Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs). We believe that recent actions taken by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network have the potential to address many of the concerns that have been raised regarding the safety, equity, and transparency of the system. As a member organization whose core mission is to advance the organ transplant community through patient care, research, education and advocacy, ASTS looks forward to the opportunity to provide its clinical and transplant policy expertise to assist the Administration and Congress in making further improvements.
