AD&D Insurance Options for Organ Procurement, Medical, and Surgical Professionals

Resources compiled by the Standards & Quality Committee, March 2026

These resources are provided as information only and do not constitute an endorsement by ASTS

1. Sector-Specific AD&D Coverage

American Foundation for Donation & Transplantation (AFDT)

Best For: Organ procurement professionals (OPO staff, ORCs, transplant recovery teams)
Highlights:
• Offers $100k–$500k in coverage for as little as $72/year.
• No medical exam; coverage guaranteed with premiums paid.

• Includes 24-hour protection, common-carrier travel coverage, and dismemberment benefits.

Why it matters:

This is the most directly relevant option for OPO staff and the only insurer tailoring AD&D coverage specifically to the organ donation field

2. AD&D Coverage Through Professional Associations

A. American Medical Association (AMA)

Best For: Medical students, residents, and institutional groups (NOT individual practicing physicians).

Highlights:

  • AMA offers Group Life AD&D insurance through medical schools, teaching hospitals, and residency programs.
  • AD&D is not offered as an individual member policy for practicing physicians.
  • Institutional plans include AD&D components alongside disability and group life.

Key Takeaway:

AMA AD&D applies only within group institutional plans - not as a standalone physician benefit.

B. American College of Surgeons (ACS)

Best For: Practicing surgeons, ACS members

Highlights:

  • ACS provides individual AD&D coverage up to $500,000.
  • Eligibility: ACS members under age 65 working > 30 hours/week.
  • Covers accidental death, loss of limbs, loss of sight, paralysis, and loss-of-use injuries.
  • Spousal coverage available.

Why is matters:

ACS provides the broadest individual AD&D option for surgeons.
