About Maria Baimas-George, MD, MPH
Dr. Baimas-George is an abdominal transplant surgeon, researcher, and author dedicated to improving health literacy and patient-centered care. A graduate of Colgate University, she earned both her Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees from Tulane University before completing her general surgery residency at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center and an ASTS-accredited fellowship in Abdominal Organ Transplantation and Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery at the University of Colorado. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center / Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Medical Director of the Atrium Research on Transplantation (ART) Laboratory. Through her Strength of My Scars educational books, Dr. Baimas-George combines her passions for medicine, art, and storytelling to help children, families, and transplant patients better understand complex medical conditions and treatments.
